A three, which might actually be the lowest score I've ever given an episode of Thrones. I liked three things. The direction, Arya, and Cleganebowl. The actors always elevate even the worst written material but I'm done giving them bonus points for that.

10.
So, naive individual that I was, I thought the The Long Night would be the longest, most intense cardiac arrest that Game of Thrones would ever deliver for me. They topped it. Maybe not in terms of filmmaking excellence - I'll need a few more rewatches to decide that, once my pulse has finally dipped below 200 - but in terms of character-based tension and pure emotional agony, somehow, they topped it. I was so invested in everything that was happening to every character on screen that there were times when it felt like my heart was about to tear its way out of my rib cage, and times when every part of me (especially the part of me that loves Daenerys Targaryen) was silently screaming for it all to stop. And yet, even as it was all happening, I knew deep down that every twist and turn that this story has taken has led us here, and that whatever hopes I had once harbored for how things might turn out ... this was the story that I had signed up for. And God Damn ... as absolutely heart-wrenching as it is, it all fits.
Bravo, David Benioff, Dan Weiss, Miguel Sapochnick, GRRM, and every member of the cast and crew. You successfully destroyed me, and all I can say is thank you. This may not be the ending I, fanciful idealist that I am, "wanted", but I'm grateful nonetheless.

Unsullied here! So, immediately after watching I'd no idea how to rate this ep. I've been talking to a friend just now and getting my thoughts together and I've ended up with an 8. Visually it was stunning. I thought it was absolutely gorgeous. I loved (well, not loved, but you know what I mean) seeing the brutality of war. I also loved seeing exactly why dragons are considered so fucking terrifying. Like, I knew they are, but this episode made me feel it under my skin. Cersei and Jaime's death was... not what I expected, but it made sense. I was terrified Arya would actually die, but it was worth the tension and heart ache to see that beautiful last scene with the horse.
HOWEVER, (and maybe I should've deducted more points) the fact Dany started burning innocents after the city surrended felt completely unearned to me. I could tell we were heading this way (the Mad Queen), but not like this. Not after a surrender. Not with no obvious justification other than "she's pissed off". I assumed she'd fly to the keep and maybe people would die as collateral damage in her effort to bring down Cersei, but just randomly burning up innocents? Nope. That felt competely out of the blue.

This was one of the best depictions of the carnage that ensues when a city is sacked that I have ever seen. It was not a war, but rather an apocalyptic event that everyone there - whether good or bad - was simply trying to survive. An instant 10.
When I first read the chapter where Daenerys gave birth to dragons in A Game of Thrones some 12 or so years ago, I had been excited to see what they would do when they came to Westeros. I imagined no castle standing in her path as she started her conquest. Never, however, did I expect the sheer destruction and horror that transpired here. Reflecting on it now, though, I should have known that a story like this would go for exactly such a cataclysmic event. This was not those we like against those we don't, but rather both parties simply attempting to survive against an unstoppable weapon that does not discriminate. And amidst the destruction, the nature of the "good" army was questioned - they pillaged, attempted to rape, struck down those who had surrendered and those who were innocent.
I do think, however, that Euron should not have killed a dragon so easily in the last episode - it slightly lessened the impact of seeing Drogon's sheer might. The Night King is obviously special, so Viserion's death is understandable, but Euron had it too easy. They should have found a more convincing way of showing Rhaegal's death.

8/10
The writing is still pretty sloppy, but whatever. This season and it's plot lines desperately needed more time and we are now facing the consequences.
The good? Dany snapping and wreaking havoc. The war crimes on the "good guys" side and the absolute chaos of the battle. The bad? The way Dany snapped. Surely killing Rhaegal here would make more sense.
The plot armour in this show carries on being even more and more ridiculous, but that's that. Thank god that the shitty character that was Euron died. Good god everything about him was so tragically bad. Golden company was also hilariously bad. This season has been a tad disappointing, but this was a pretty solid episode.

This is the first episode this season that I find difficult to rate. I need a rewatch. But it's funny how some of you experienced it differently and for you this was easier to rate than previous episodes...

But it's funny how some of you experienced it differently and for you this was easier to rate than previous episodes... I think it's possible to give an episode a 10 and still hate the outcome. That's where I'm at. That may not make a lot of sense to some, but I'm shook to the core at where the story ran away and still loved the episode. Cried, cheered, sat on the edge of my seat, hid my eyes, watched in horror with open mouth... all of it. That's amazing even if I don't feel some of the story pieces were deserved.

I gave it a 6 too. I had some major problems with the writing, but I can't deny that this was one of the most beautifully shot, directed and acted episodes of the entire series.

Probably my favorite episode of GOT. No hyperbole there. This show is going out on the highest possible note and it's surreal. I never thought the season would be this good, especially after season seven which was fine and all but certainly far from the best.
As something that looks at the true horror of war, both in how relentless and senseless it is, this is up there with any movie.
I'll never forget the image of Jaime and Cersei dying together underground. So fucking haunting. That was perfect ending for these characters, infinitely better than those ancient Valonqar theories.
And Arya's rebirth... it's so fitting that we mostly experience the episode through her. The horrors she sees here are worse than anything the Night King could have mustered, and you can see it shakes every single of her 8-season-long beliefs.
Still processing...
Yep, following this show for so long was definitely worth it.

Ten. Fucking brilliant. The brutality of war. Character dynamics. The horror of dragons. CLEGANEBOWL. Beautiful ending to two of the one of the best characters we've had... truly great. My problem with the whole brutality of war thing is we've seen it all before. We saw it at the Blackwater with guys getting the heads popped by rocks and sliced in half by the hound, at Snowbowl with the slaughter in the shield wall when wildlings were getting massacred by the Boltons, we saw it at the "siege" of Winterfell when the Baratheons were crawling around in the dirt with no legs... They've driven that home so much. This episode is brilliantly put together and well shot, but it feels overly gratuitous. A large part of the episode is just "Dany burns shit". It goes on forever, and beyond things like Cleganebowl and Varys' death, it's largely void of meaning. Characters like Euron and Qyburn die in bland, predictable and pointless ways. The Valonqar prophecy is completely abandoned... I'm not even saying it's a bad episode, it's better than last week for sure, but it just feels disappointing. I suppose that might be the point, but there was a lot of long term storytelling that feels somewhat unrewarded. Cersei's death should be more important. Varys' schemes just go up in smoke. What did happen to his "alliance to restore house Targaryen" schtick from Season 5 anyway? Then again, maybe the point is that Dany breaks the wheel. The wheel is the scheming of Westeros' lords after all. The Varys's, Cerseis and Tyrions of Wesreros lay out their schemes, and Danaerys destroys them. She's breaking the wheel, of course that means upending an entire city, killing thousands, destroying a civilisation. It's Slaver's Bay X10. It's chaos and it leaves King's Landing in ruins. All that's fine, the grand scheme and premise is sound. But ultimately, that was all this episode was, and for a series that's always had depth and tension, this episode was very one note. Spectacle is this series greatest asset, and a spectacle this was. But once it's over your realise it was just that, and nothing more. Also, if Arya kills Dany... Eugh.

It goes on forever, and beyond things like Cleganebowl and Varys' death, it's largely void of meaning. The problems I had with Blackwater and Snowbowl is that they seems to glorified the battle from a spectacular standpoint. Like sure the guys got their heads smashed and Snowbowl shows what it's like being surrounded by cluster panic soldiers, but they are pushed aside for "oh look how awesome the battle looks!". The closest to showing the brutality of war is Spoils of War where Jaime reacted to Lannister soldiers burned by Drogon, but it was so short and we got used to Dany burning enemies by now. This episode effectively shows the brutality effectively imo. Not perfect, but it was the closest to how much I felt fear and horror while watching the episode. What it is like during a siege as a bystander, especially given how most epics tend to depict sieges as victory/triumph. It's also effective for Arya and Jon: with Jon he's learning what men are capable of doing in battles, something he's oblivious to given he worked in the NW full of criminals and the Snowbowl has no bystanders, and Arya learning about pain and deaths on a whole new level.

Special shoutout to a gorgeous shot which is not getting the love it deserves in the wake of Kings Landing battle....Drogon emerging from the darkness to burn Vary. Utterly breathtaking in its eerie beauty.
My non-reader reactor buddy hated this episode fwiw. But she has hated the whole season

I calculated the average ratings so far and it's not as divisive as I thought it would be. 8x01 - 7.83 | 30 voters 8x02 - 9.41 | 34 voters 8x03 - 8.56 | 32 voters 8x04 - 7.40 | 32 voters 8x05 - 8.20 | 30 voters Gives the season an average of 8.28 before the series finale.
