I don't watch reaction videos because I think they're pretty exaggerated A large number of them are exaggerated, I'll agree. Those fruitcakes who call themselves "TheNormies" for example, ugh! However, there *are* a lot of regular people out there who seem very similar to us here and they're not only intelligent about the story and books but they are genuine in their reactions and comments while watching. I like these two real well and they're new to doing reaction videos. Sierra is a smart chick, she always calls it well:

^^ She seems to be well informed regarding the back stories and genuine in her reaction. He seems to be placating her a bit and not quite as interested in the intricacies of the plot lines.

Another thing I love about this episode - and I already alluded to it in a post of mine yesterday - is how D&D always manage to incorporate intertextual references to the classics and to philosophy. This episode is a reference to existentialism, in particular the philosophy of Albert Camus. Jon, Dany and Beric are "absurd heroes". People who know that they will lose no matter what, because death will always win, but they choose to fight anyway. Camus calls this the basic contradiction between the human mind's unceasing quest for clarification and the meaningless nature of the world. This contradiction is what causes us to feel "absurdity". Because on the one hand, our minds tell us that the world is meaningful, but on the other hand, we have the brutal realisation that death is completely meaningless and retroactively makes the world meaningless as well. So the only thing to do according to Camus is to become an absurd hero just like our heroes in the story. Camus calls this the "rebellion". It is the act of INSISTING on meaning in a meaningless world. That's what Dany, Jon and the rest of the fellowship do. They don't accept the NK's meaninglessness and insist on creating a meaning of their own. That's what Camus has to say about this: “I continue to believe that this world has no ultimate meaning. But I know that something in it has a meaning and that is man, because he is the only creature to insist on having one.” It's funny that this episode gets so much hate for being absurd - and yes, some of it was just inconsistent editing and definitely not intentional. But a lot of it was D&D referencing Camus. This is not a coincidence at all. I'm a 150% sure they read and studied him and so did GRRM. It's a huge theme in the books and on the show, not only with Jon and Dany but other characters too (e.g. Arya). The scene between Jon and Beric talking about death and the meaning of life and also that scene with Dany about being a stupid hero (in other words an absurd hero) have Albert Camus written all over them. And I love it. Camus said another thing, which I find really interesting in the context of Thrones because of its "winter"-imagery: "In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer."Finding that invincible summer within us is the entire point of this episode and story.

https://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/6v3cv4/spoilers_extended_a_minimal_rewrite_to_make_the/ Better than what we got, but it is what it is. I think Kairos did as well or better up-thread -- but "whatever" -- I think we agree that the show could have done a better job with the logical flow of the recent episodes (without that much additional effort -- sometimes I think D&D have stopped trying to come up with the most logical progression of events) -- but I try my best not to let these issues affect my enjoyment of the show. In this past episode, unfortunately it did. Hopefully, I won't be so distracted while watching the remaining episodes.

https://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/6v3cv4/spoilers_extended_a_minimal_rewrite_to_make_the/ Better than what we got, but it is what it is. Ugh the reddit hivemind tries to rewrite things, that always goes well. This would have helped somewhat with the logical flow of events, and even justifying the expedition, but it throws a whole load of other things out of whack at the same time, not to mention harming dramatic tension a bunch. Dany waits for them at Eastwatch just so we can eliminate some travel time? That poses the question of why she doesn't just fly all the way, not to mention making the viewer expect the dragons to show up from the very start. It can be fun to try to rewrite things yourself, but it's never as easy as it looks. Writing is damn hard.

I love this. The Stranger is one my favorite books, and I just read The Rebel a few months ago. It's cool to see touches of Camus's influence in my favorite show, especially in the conversations between Jon and Beric and the exchange between Dany and Tyrion, both of which I adored. People often overlook the fact that Benioff and Weiss met and became friends while studying classic literature together in Dublin. They're huge fans of these types of authors and great thinkers. Benioff wrote his thesis on Samuel Beckett, and they've woven several references to his works into the show. I'm sure that someone more widely read than I am has identified other ideas from similar ideas that Benioff, Weiss, and Martin have paid homage to over the years.

The few reaction vids I've actually liked were clearly not filmed with the reactor's knowledge and those are the best because they don't have to mug. There's a really great one out there for a huge Boardwalk Empire moment where the guy is pissed and gets even madder when he finds out he's being recorded lol

Ok so when I first saw this title I laughed, because of course a lot of us here called it "The Fellowship of the Wight" as did many in the internet meme-verse ...
But only the talented Zurik23M can actually take a joke, put it to the real Lord of the Rings music and make it turn out fucking stunning.
This is a tribute to all the men (and beasts) who joined together in the quest Beyond The Wall to begin the War for the Dawn.
To Thoros of Myr, Ser Beric Dondarrion, Sandor Clegane, Tormund Giantsbane, Gendry Baratheon, Ser Jorah Mormont, First Ranger Benjen Stark, Drogon, Rhaegal, Viserion, Queen Daenerys Targaryen and King Jon Snow ...

Keeping Beric instead of LSH was the best decision D&D ever made. They have also developed him brilliantly. I can't wait for him to die heroically in the final battle.

Nah, LSH would have been a lot more interesting, thematically and visually. And important for Brienne, Jaime and probably Arya. Also. Michelle Fairley is arguably the best actor this show has ever had. Definitely stronger than Richard Dormer, who is good, but not Michelle Fairley-good. But it is what it is.
