I had really lost interest in the books but after such a disappointing ending from the show I now want to believe he’ll finish them more than ever.
Not holding my breath though.

George just gave us the biggest hope we've had in years for Winds. He's headed to New Zealand for 2020 World Con and said this in NAB: It takes about 4 months at minimum after the publishers have it to get it to print, so he has to be closing in on finishing it. I may be just a summer child but personally, I think he's cleaning up inconsistencies and doing pre-publishing housekeeping... When was this posted on his blog?

Oh, I thought it might have been older and he's just confirmed for this con recently. Anyway, don't torture yourselves, guys. He thought he could finish by Oct 2015, 3 and a half years ago. Then when he didn't hit that, he thought he could do it by Christmas. Then sometime after that he publicly stated he was months away. From his perspective he has been < 3 months away from finishing for the last several years at least. So him saying he might finish by next summer is about as meaningful as Sansa's promise to keep Jon's secret. Better to have no expectations whatsoever so you can be pleasantly surprised if (IF) the book ever sees the light of day.

Not believing in this. I will trust him when he post the release date.
As much as I am looking forward to TWOW, I’m also expecting some disappointment considering the amount of theories and expectations fans has built up.

Well, the weight of expectations has crippled season 8 so I expect the same to happen with the books.

I think he will need to kill a lot of POV characters really soon. I can't see how you can keep 20 POV characters in one book.
So Theon, Selmy, Areo Hotah, Aeron Greyjoy could die really early in the book.

It's not impossible, but he has to do far more detailed version of S6-S8 with far more characters and storylines. And last two seasons will feel like slow paced filler lol if he really wants to end the story with only 2 more books.
I hope we will get that book some day. I really want to see his solution to all these narrative problems.

As for the Wall falling, I could see it being the epilogue of Winds or prologue of Dream.

GRRM really has dug himself deeper into the corners with multiple storylines and POV characters. I couldn’t imagine him keeping up with all of them that can resolve with a satisfying conclusion, especially when thinking about the layout and structure.
TWOW: - Battle of Winterfell - Battle in Meereen - fAegon and Dorne - Cersei plot - Jon and the NW - Sansa and the vale - Brienne and Jaime with LS - the Others - Euron - Dany with the Dothraki and going to back to Meereen (and maybe sail off to Westeros at the end)
Of course the storylines will merge, but it will take long before he will go in depths about the political plot and all.

Dany has to take control of the Dothraki, to return to Meereen, to meet Tyrion and Victarion, to make him her Hand for some reason, to resolve problems in Meeren, to leave for Westeros, she has then to meet Jon, fall in love with him, defeat the WW, burn KL and die.
And all that in only two books. And in the last book she had 10 chapter were not that much happened until the very end.
With this pace GRRM will need 4 more books.

Dany's storyline is the only one I really struggle to see him fitting in.
I think Cersei will probably die in twow and be replaced with fAegon, which will contribute to Dany's descent. Imagine fighting to overthrow a fake whose claim is stronger than yours (if it was real obvs) only to find out the guy you're banging not only has a stronger claim as well, but is the real deal.
Bran, Sansa, Arya, Jon and Co all seem like their stories could be reasonably wrapped up in two books. Arya will return to Westeros and maybe team up with LSH to destroy the Grey's and then head North to be with Sansa. Bran will leave the cave soon and return to WF. Sansa probably takes the Knights of the Vale North to retake Winterfell from the Boltons only to bump into Jon, who's there with wildlings and northerners who he's managed to rally. No idea about Rickon. But I think the Starks' stories could all follow a version of S6 comfortably within one book.
Dany tho. Jfc.

I also assume the narrative structure of ADoS will be the same. They'll defeat the army of the dead in the first half and then move south on the second, where Dany snaps and ends up the final boss.
