I agree that they could've done Dany's downfall much better. But anyone who says that she has no signs of madness and she's so good etc needs to consider this: Aerys was a good man in his twenties. Pre-Duskendale he was probably a better guy in many respects than Rhaegar even. And had that trauma not happened to him he may have remained sane for longer still. Perhaps for his whole life. None of it was inevitable. But it was always a possibility hanging over his head. As it was with his daughter. |

so jaime and cersei were both, in a way, double kingslayers. tho only jaime did his own kills and obvs cersei did not intend to cause tommen suicide.

One bowl we all missed out on was the Danebowl. NCW killing Pilou, his old actor buddy who used to babysit his kids while he was still the more famous Danish actor. I don't know if NCW suggested Pilou for the role or if it was all just coincidental but it's funny to me that the two have known each another for so long within such a small country's theater and film community and that the ending designated for them brought them back together thusly.

I just hope Lena and NCW's partners are cool with that bit of info being divulged.  But they really did play better off each other here than they ever had before. And Lena made Cersei so pitiable in her last outing that I envy NCW getting to cuddle her.  |

But I guess they were just going for method acting and it clearly worked because their chemistry was insane in this episode |

Mad Queen Dany has been given LOTS of time. There's a reason why it's been a top theory for years. She's had two or three times a season since season 3 or 4 where someone has had to convince her that slaughtering everyone who disagrees with her isn't the best move. How many times does a "genocide is bad" conversation need to occur to adequately set up that someone might be a little insane?
I think anyone claiming this was a mad dash hasn't been paying attention. Dany has been on the edge of "burn them all" since season 3. Arguably since season 1... look at her reaction when Drogo starts talking about his plans. She has been reeled in time and again, but this season saw everyone who COULD reel her in either killed or lose her confidence. People have been predicting this ending for YEARS. That wouldn't have been possible if it came out of nowhere.
I don't know how much more foreshadowed things could get. She's had at least 1 "genocide is bad, lets try something a little more subtle first" lecture every season since she gained power. Some seasons have 2 or 3. Dany's first instinct was ALWAYS fire and blood—she just has had others to reel in those impulses and control her rage.

Anyone who thinks that GRRM is going to deliver something different is sadly mistaken. The ending is the same for all these characters (main ones) but the road to it and execution will be different.
Varys is going to burn for his allegiance to Faegon, Jaime and Cersei will die together, Dany will go bonkers, Cleganebowl, Sansa possibly QitN or Wardeness and Bran as the king or head of the council.
Btw dragon flying over King's Landing in Bran's vision was Drogon back in season 4 or something. They knew it back then, like Arya with the Night King. Just the setup, execution, the timing was wrong.

I think the books will be even darker. All crowd pleasing moments were show-only. I think both Tyrion and Jon will be darker than they are in the show.
I mean he has to make Jon darker for him to fall in love with Dany. If GRRM wants Dany to be "mad" for a long time, a not just in the end.
And if Dany burns Meereen in the books, I could see her and Tyrion being two bitter and crazy villains that are coming to destroy Westeros.
I think this is the reasony he can't write new books. How to make all these things work? Plus he has even more storylines and characters in his books.

I was pretty hyped up last night, but today I'm deflated like a party balloon. The shock of the episode took a bit for me to process.
I realize this is probably how Dany will go in the books (with a lot more explanation and fleshing out of the descent) if this is how they're portraying her on the show. I can't really argue that and yes it's been foreshadowed over the years with everyone warning her not to be the thing she wanted to overcome. I guess I thought she would actually succeed at that. This failure feels a lot bigger. If the point of the story is people are just going to go back to being what they always were (ie Jaime back to Cersei) then really, why bother writing it at all? We have all that in real life, do we need our fantasy stories to mimic it and make us feel more pointless? Maybe I'm feeling like a nihilistic Sandor this morning but that's where I'm at in the stages of grief for the show, I guess.

If they had Dany show disregard for the lives of the innocent women and children in pursuit of her ultimate goal, I think that would have made perfect sense and would have been in line with what we know about her (especially in light of recent events). But no, she actively made an effort to slaughter them in the tens of thousands.
And that is such a cynical and mean-spirited way to end Dany's storyline after eight seasons of watching her learn and grow as a character. It makes me feel empty.
That entire storyline almost feels like a take on the "Hell hath no fury" bullshit, and that to me is just sickening.
